You might see Thomas on the platform when you visit the station, or if it is wet, and the bar is open, he is usually found in there.

You may have already visited Rushden Station to enjoy a beer in the bar, had a family train trip at an RHTS event, found festive fun at a Goods Shed event, and even visited the museum to explore the exhibits in the original station rooms; but did you know that you can also arrange a private group visit?

These bespoke visits, for schools, colleges, history groups, transport groups, photography groups, to name just a few that we have hosted, can be arranged by emailing museum@rhts.co.uk. Our volunteers will work with you to organise a visit that will satisfy your group’s interests .

Here you can find out information about group visits from frequestly asked questions.

How much notice is needed to arrange a group visit ?

Organising a group visit depends on our volunteer availablity, so the more time the better, but a minimum of two weeks.

Is there a minimum or maximum group size?

Our volunteers can accomodate groups of up to 30 people, with the potential to be split into smaller groups on the day.

When is the best time of year for a group visit ?

The museum is closed during the winter months November – March, to help maintain conditions for the collection. Therefore visits are best organised during the warmer months April -October.

What time of day can a group visit?

If we have volunteers available , whatever time suits your group , but this is subject to negotiation.

Will the bar be available during group visits?

The bar has set opening times, so if your visit coincides with these then it is available for your group.

Will the buffet carriage be open ?

Generally speaking , no but if your group wants to hire the buffet carriage this needs to be arranged separately, see the Buffet Carriage page for details. However, this can be incorporated into the group visit tour if planned well in advance.

Will the trains be running on a group visit?

No, because of the logistics of the railway operations plus health and safety consideration, museum group visits do not include a train ride. However some of the carriages can be used as part of the experience. Private hire of a train requests should be directed to The Rushden, Higham and Wellingborough Railway (RHWR).

Will the shop be open on a group visit?

No, the Buffer Stop shop is only open on RHTS event days.

What is the charge for adult group visits?

As a charity we rely on donations and we would like a minimum donation of £25 for 1-10 people, and £50 for 11- 30 people on guided group visits.

Is there a charge for schools/childrens clubs and colleges?

As a charity we rely on donations and would like a donation of £1 per child for a volunteer run visit. Please see our offers in ‘Group Visits’ for more details and colleges.

Do you make outreach visits to care homes?

An outreach visit to care homes can be arranged through museum@rhts.co.uk, for a donation of £50 for an hour visit with two volunteers, payable in advance to accountspayable@rhts.co.uk
