Our collection of local transport related items is situated in the original four rooms of Rushden Station that was built by the Midland Railway Company in 1893.
Our aim is to open the rooms and share the collection with as many visitors to the station as possible and to give them an enjoyable experience. To do this we need the help of volunteers from the Rushden Historical Transport Society membership. The Trustees and Museum Management Group hope you will give it a try.
Come and join the team.
Here are six simple steps to becoming a volunteer steward in Rushden Transport Museum take a look below.

Step 1 Become an RHTS member
The first step to volunteering as a steward in the Rushden Transport Museum is to complete the membership form to join the Rushden Historical Transport Society. Forms are available at the bar or on line.
Don’t forget to tick that you want to help in the museum.
To find out all the other opportunities for volunteering in the RHTS click ‘Read More’.

Step 2 Confirmation of membership
Once your application form has been processed by the Trustees, your details will be picked up by the Volunteer Coordinator for the Museum Management Group, who will contact you to arrange a chat at the station at a mutually convenient time.
This will usually be by email, but by text or phone call if email this is not possible.

Step 3 Meet up at the museum
During the meeting you will be given information about the museum , its purpose and the team that run it. You will be asked about your interests, life and work experiences and what you would like to get out of volunteering in the museum. If you want to proceed with giving volunteering a go you will have an induction, when any questions you have will be answered.

Step 4 The Induction Tour
At the induction, this may be straight away if convenient, or on your own or with others at a later date, you will have a ‘walk and talk tour of the museum. During the tour the procedures for opening and closing the museum will be explained and what we expect our volunteers to do regarding the rota. We will answer any questions you may have.

Step 5 Induction Checklist
Museum Accreditation is an internationally recognised museum standard, a framework for running the museum helping it improve how it is run, how it looks after its collections and the services it offers to the public. During induction we will work through a checklist to ensure that you are given the relevant information about the museum policies concerning the collection, health and safety, and visitors. You will be invited to come to a trial session (a ‘duty’) with an Museum Managing Group (MMG) member.

Step 6 Joining the team
You enjoyed the experience and would love to join our team of volunteers, that’s great!
You will be asked to sign the ‘Volunteers Agreement’, and asked to fill in some sessions on the rota. You will continue to be supported during these duties. We encourage working in a pair, so if you have a friend who is also a member that could also get involved even better, please let us know. The more volunteers the more often the museum can open.
We are a friendly group so give it a go!
Here are some of the frequently asked questions about volunteering in the museum.
We would like volunteers to do a two hour session per month, but this is flexible.
The Museum Management Group produce a rota each year that lists all the RHTS Events and times. Volunteers are asked to fill in dates they are available to give their time and the volunteer co-ordinator manages the rota so that the museum is open as much as possible.
Smart casual clothes are fine, we have maroon waist coats with volunteer badges that help identify you as a volunteer, these are available in a variety of sizes.
At quiet times on duty try to get familiar with the four rooms and their contents, gradually you will pick up the history of the station. If you are asked a question that you don’t know the answer to be honest then refer them to colleague. If as a group we don’t know the answer we will try to find out and then present the information for all our visitors.
Events attract the general public and the museum aims to be open during the whole day, usually manned by two or three pairs of volunteers
During events the museum focus is on families and we provide a ‘hunting’ activity for children to do around the museum with the help of their families, it is fun for all; but it can get quite busy!
